In the week in which World Bee Day is celebrated, a date designated by the United Nations (UN), the Partners for the Amazon Platform (PPA) held a live broadcast on the subject within the “Campo em Debate”, one of the sections of its first institutional campaign, Diverse Mosaic.
With mediation of Augusto Correa, Executive Secretary of PPA, participated in the meeting Marcelo (Senior Social Responsibility Analyst at Vale Foundation) and Hermogenes Sá (Executive Director of the Peabiru Institute and co-founder of Peabiru Forest Products). On the occasion, the guests addressed topics such as the pollination service and its importance for the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity, understanding the contributions of the private sector and the field to the promotion of the honey chain in the region.
In his presentation, Hermógenes de Sá spoke about the work of the Peabiru Institute for over a decade with meliponiculture (raising of stingless bees) in the Amazon, reinforcing the importance of bees also in income generation processes and in environmental education with traditional communities.
Marcelo Peixoto is responsible for leading an initiative that aims to contribute to the structuring of the honey production chain with small producers in Maranhão. In his speech, Marcelo spoke about the implementation challenges and achievements obtained in this process, detailing the ways in which the Vale Foundation supports beekeeping enterprises in the region and its experiments in the meliponiculture front. “A company that intends to generate shared value in its operations and generate scale needs to look at the communities with which it interacts,” he commented.
No less important, the guests discussed the relationship between protecting bees and conserving Amazonian sociobiodiversity. According to Hermógenes, “as they are essential for pollination, bees provide a very important environmental service both for agricultural production and for the maintenance and sustainability of our ecosystem.”
